My primary source of inspiration for this painting was the urban environment, and the random assortment of marks, textures, colours, text and pattern that can be found in man-made surfaces. This image is actually inspired by the side of a skip, which just shows that artists can find inspiration everywhere!
My process for this was that from this source material, I built up my painting in layers, making fresh decisions as I went about how to proceed. I intuitively build up my marks and colours in a way that creates something new, not just copying what I saw, and makes a composition and a whole that is a unique image. The process is such that the painting only emerges as I paint it, and the final piece is something impossible to envisage at the beginning.
